The traditional planning, based on administrative decisions, was not always successful in defining correct policies. Although formal and technical methods still remain necessary, it is now recognized that they are not sufficient. Contemporary planning and decision-making requires the construction of formal and informal dialogue among major stakeholders, individuals and collectives. In our project we do not have ambitions to solve this complex issue, but instead we offer a methodology for communication and cooperation of major stakeholders to increase their involvement in development and implementation of regional policies based on sustainable economic practices. Its core method is multicriteria analysis, with monetary and non-monetary valuation. The approach should address policy problems rather than theory and it was implemented on a pilot study of sustainable management in Slovenský raj National Park. The project provided an opportunity for the research team to act as a facilitator. Whatever product - sustainable management plan - might eventually emerge, it would be the outcome of an organic community process and would than have the legitimacy and the robustness of a non-imposed solution. The article presents a part of this process. The future ambitions remain to continue facilitation the collective development of the program for sustainable management of the park. This could be a precondition to become a full member of the prestige network of European protected areas - Pan Parks.
