Trees are an important feature of the urban environment. In efforts to identify a greater diversityof species adapted to urban sites, dendroecological studies can help evaluate the reaction andtolerance of different tree species to stresses such as drought. This study examined the potentialof silver lime (Tilia tomentosa Moe n c h ) for use as an urban tree in northern parts of CentralEurope and adjacent, milder parts of Northern Europe (the CNE-region), based on habitat studiesin north-east Romania and in the adjacent Republic of Moldavia. The data obtained in the fieldwere compared with corresponding data from paved and park environments in urban Copenhagen.The results showed that silver lime trees in the natural habitats grew successfully in warmerand dryer conditions than those in park environments in Copenhagen, which indicates that thisspecies also has potential for use at paved urban sites provided that water infiltration into plantingpits can be enhanced.
