The research was conducted in 14 isolated forest remnants differing in size, shape and topography, located on the Glubczycc Plateau in southern Poland. The main aims of the investigation were to describe the phytocoenotic diversity of each of the woodland islands and to consider how the number of woodland communities and their floristic richness arc affected by local physical and biogeographic factors. The most important controlling factors were found to be: the area and shape of the forest fragment, habitat diversity, the degree of anthropogenic disturbance, and edge effects. The following observations of the woodland flora were noted: I. the number of species increases as woodland size increases (an exception is where small woods arc richer in species that the larger ones because of a greater diversity of habitats in those smaller woodlands); II. greater variation in the species composition of the communities which occur in the smaller woods. In those communities there is a small proportion of geophytes and a large proportion of therophytes; III. increased proportion of ruderals (R) and competitive ruderals (C-R), which is an indication of a high level of anthropogenic disturbance; and IV. constant and relatively high proportion of alien species, which indicates advanced changes in species composition in the communities of the disturbed woodlands.
