Research was concerned with ecologically important problems of the water regime of soils, mainly of productive water, which are discussed on the basis of long-term measurements on afforested and agricultural land in the Zahorie lowlands and the Nitra loess hills. During the growth period the amounts of accessible water shows a decreasing tendency. The largest deficit of accessible water for plants occurs in autumn.
