Snow avalanches present serious problems for visitors and dwellers in mountainous terrain and they also signifi cantly affect the environment. Here, we present a brief overview of innovative methods based on geo-information technology (GIT) tested in the mountain areas of Slovakia. Partial results were applied from on-going work of the expert Norwegian Geotechnical Institute team (NGI); and this article presents the object-oriented mapping algorithm developed in eCognition which automatically identifis and digitally maps avalanche deposits. In addition, we em- ploy the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) mapping tools and procedures to precisely measure avalanche run-outs and fracture lines, and describe the numerical models which simulate the dynamics of geophysical motion of mass from its activation up to its run-outs in three-dimensional terrain. The appropriately calibrated model can subsequently predict avalanche run-outs and potential avalanche effcts. This combined technology enables continual update of cadastral avalanches and provides a highly professional basis for decision-making and planning of human activities in Slovakian mountain areas.
