Extensive, broad and complex land consolidation (LC) brings direct and indirect economic, environmental, social and landscape benefits for land owners and communities alike. LC is a planning and development tool crucial for regional development, revitalization and environmental protection. Herein, we present a brief overview of LC history and project stages in Slovakia; with description of the current dismal situation and a warning against oversimplification at the expense of the landscape and purposeless “solutions”. Problems when landscape is modelled without considering boundary conditions in the surrounds and the landscape formations crossing and beyond the area’s border are discussed and the necessity of proposing relevant and acceptable measures for all concerned parties in the LC project, including landowners, is highlighted. We then assess the possibilities of landscape modelling and design given the large amounts of data, information and knowledge (un)related to LC and an information system providing an example of possibilities is briefly introduced.
